Hi. What kind of injury you had is very important. Was it a twisting injury or a direct impact? Did you have pain everyday for the last 1 year? Any other symptoms of instability or locking of knee. All these questions are unanswered. If you have localised knee pain and that too in front of knee especially when you are getting up after sitting for a long time may suggest you have chondromalacia.

Your history suggests high energy trauma. Try applying Ice packs. Keep affected limb elevated. Medications like Enzomac will help in swelling. Persistent pain and swelling can be due to either fracture or ligament sprains. Ideal time for ligament recovery is 4 weeks
Next Steps
You Amy need to get x-rays/MRI done
