Hypertension
My avg BP is around 135-145/80-90 . Sometimes under mental stress systolic reaches 150's but diastolic does not cross 90.All tests like blood ECG etc are normal. I am on low sodium diet. + Regular exercise. Also there are no symptoms of any secondary cause . cardiologist says it is essential htn and I may have to take life Long meds. I do not want to start on meds as yet. Pls tell me how dangerous is my BP and at these BP levels do I need to start on medication.

Well I think if despite lifestyle interventions your blood pressure is high you need to be on antihypertensives Usually hypertension doesn't have very marked symptoms unless it is very high and starts to cause acute complications A persistently elevated blood pressure at the range you are mentioning will cause slow and gradual chronic complications So my advice is to adopt lifestyle approaches (DASH) and if still not controlled start the drugs Dr Ashish Srivastava General Physician & Clinical Cardiologist
