Hello Doctor,
I am 10 days postpartum after a C-section and am breastfeeding my newborn baby boy. I developed hives during my first trimester of pregnancy and previously took Levohal-M for around 3 months, which helped control them.
Now the hives have returned. The itching started on the backs of my hands, and later the hives appeared on my chest and other parts of my body. The rash moves from one area to another, and the itching is currently mild and improving. I suspect food may have triggered it, as I recently ate restaurant beef fry and homemade kalka roast.
I currently have no breathing difficulty, facial or lip swelling, or other emergency symptoms.
Could you please advise what may be causing these recurrent hives and which medication is safe for me to take while breastfeeding a newborn? Should I restart Levohal-M or use another treatment?
Thank you.
Hives returning like this after delivery are usually allergic, often tied to a specific food, and postpartum hormone shifts can make skin more reactive for some weeks. The rash moving around your body with no breathing or facial swelling fits a typical allergic flare, not an emergency.
Next Steps
Avoid the beef fry and kalka roast for now in case either triggered this, and note anything else you ate just before it started. Please check with whoever prescribed Levohal-M before restarting it, since a breastfeeding-safe antihistamine choice for your newborn's age needs their review, or a dermatologist's.
Health Tips
Go to the hospital right away if you get lip, tongue or throat swelling, breathing trouble, or the hives spread very fast.
