Hello Doctor,
I'm a 21-year-old male (turning 22 in September) and I'm 5'6" (168 cm). I'd like to know whether my growth plates have fused and if I have any remaining natural height growth potential.
Could you please advise:
- Which imaging test is most appropriate (hand/wrist X-ray, knee X-ray, or something else)?
- Should I visit an orthopedic doctor or an endocrinologist for this evaluation?
I'm mainly looking for a proper assessment so I can know my remaining growth potential, if any.
Thank you.

At 21–22 years of age, most males have complete fusion of their growth plates, so significant natural height increase is unlikely. If you wish to know for certain, the most appropriate initial investigation is an X-ray of the left hand and wrist (bone age assessment). If the growth plates are fused, there is no meaningful natural height growth potential remaining.
Next Steps
Consult an Orthopaedic Surgeon initially for clinical evaluation and a bone age X-ray. If there is a history of delayed puberty, hormonal disorders, or if the bone age is significantly delayed, you may be referred to an Endocrinologist for further hormonal evaluation. If you would like a detailed discussion, you can also book an online consultation with me.
Health Tips
Do not rely on supplements or medications marketed to increase height after growth plate closure, as they have no proven benefit. Maintain good posture, regular exercise, and adequate nutrition for overall musculoskeletal health.

At 21 years of age, significant natural height growth is unlikely, because the growth plates are usually fused by this stage in males. Exceptions can occur with markedly delayed puberty or certain hormonal conditions.
The usual first investigation is a bone-age X-ray of the left hand and wrist. It can show whether skeletal maturation is complete, although adult-height prediction becomes less useful once the bones are fully mature. A knee X-ray is generally unnecessary unless there is a specific reason to examine the distal femoral or proximal tibial growth plates.
You may initially consult an orthopaedic doctor for examination and the X-ray. However, an endocrinologist is preferable if you had delayed puberty, very little facial/body hair, recent continuing height growth, thyroid-related symptoms, chronic illness, or concerns about a hormonal growth disorder. Endocrine evaluation may include thyroid tests, testosterone and other hormone investigations depending on the clinical findings.
Next Steps
Please post any previous height records. Comparing accurate height measurements over time is often more informative than a single measurement.
