My grand mother is 85 years old. These days she is fogetting stuff. She will wake up in the middle of the night and says that she needs lunch as it is already mid day. She keeps shouting our names day and night for no reason. when we go and ask what happened, she gives all foolish reasons. My family members could not sleep at all. Our neighbours started complaining. We tried logically explaining. She says that she understands, but she continues to shout/scream. We don't know what to do. Also her hearing is only partial and she has a habit of smoking tobacco. Kindly help me in understanding the problem and let me know if there is any medical evaluation required.

Hello. As you mentioned that she is forgetting things she seems to be developing dementia. Here there is more forgetfulness of routine things and people and day night timings than normal old age forgetfulness. The patient gets confused some part of the day without any reason and may believe that they are in some other place or not identify people. They may even get suspicious regarding the surroundings and this may cause the anger and screaming. These behaviours can be managed with medicines alone as dementia keeps worsening with time. I would suggest consulting a psychiatrist for the same. Good luck.

She could be suffering from dementia which will explain the forgetfulness and the shouting and other behaviour changes could be BPSD(behavioural and psychological symptoms in dementia)
