When some thoughts come in our mind non stop daily and disrupt our day to day activities these thoughts can be obsessions, these obsessive thoughts can be stressful and to reduce these stress we often get involved in a behavioral activity known as compulsion. The guilt and stress involving thoughts is not your fault but the mind's way to protect ourselves by exposing us to our biggest fears so that when something happens like this we are able to face it.
