Fussy toddler
My son is 18 months old and speaks just 5 words. He understands almost everything we say but doesn't speak out much. Is it Matter of concern? His hearing is absolutely normal and milestones are well achieved. Also he's fussy eater. I have tried making different food everyday but he doesn't want to eat anything. Even if he eats it's very small portion. He's just 8.5 kg. He has no health issues. Please advise.

If the understanding is ok, give your child some more time. Try and have conversations in a single language (Hindi or English).Speak to him more and get him reviewed  after anter 3months. Fussy eating is a common trouble in his age, try giving small frequent meals and more finger foods
Next Steps
Kindly share his birth details and birth weight for better assessment of growth
Health Tips
When he speaks , try and start conversation and engage with him  in it. Add on extra 1tsp ghee or butter to your food servings

It could be an isolated speech delay in your child, which is seen very often these days. usually this children develop speech slowly and finally they will achieve normal speech like their peers, may be one or two years later than them. If his hearing is absolutely normal,  you can rest assured.

Talk to him more words. If he has picked up 5 words he is sure to pick up more. He is underweight slightly . Increase the quantity of food keeping the quality Same.

A child of 18 months speaks around 5 to 20 new word which becomes around 200 words by 3 to 5 years . Speech is one thing which doesn’t only depend on development of brain , but also depends on the amount of stimulation the child gets to speak .If you are a joint family, if you have another elder sibling the child is seen to speak faster.
Next Steps
Keep lot of nursery rhymes, books, animated series for kids handy and read out to him . Speak about the fruit name, colours , numbers , shapes , animals aloud and make him repeat.
Health Tips
Regarding fussy eaters , see that child is given variety of foods , is not constipated, decrease milk feeds , greater gap between meals. Sometimes it pays to not push child to eat. He himself will ask for food after some time.
