At 1.8 years of age, frequent illness—especially repeated loose motions—can lead to temporary weakness and poor weight gain, and your child’s weight (9 kg) is on the lower side, so this needs careful atention. Persistent loose stools (even 3–4/day) after infection may be due to post-infectious gut recovery or lactose intolerance, and continuous medicines are usually not required unless specifically indicated. At present, focus on rehydration and nutrition: continue normal home diet (khichdi, dal, rice, curd, banana, apple, coconut water) and do not stop feeding. Give ORS after each loose stool in small frequent sips. You can give Zinc supplementation (20 mg once daily for 14 days) which is over-the-counter and helps reduce duration and recurrence of diarrhea. Probiotics like Saccharomyces boulardii can also be given for a few days as OTC support. Avoid fruit juices, outside food, and excess sugary items. If the child looks weak, it is important to assess for dehydration, anemia, or malnutrition, so a pediatric review is needed. Any further medications like antibiotics, antidiarrheals, or lactose-free formulas should be given only after pediatrician advice.
