Though above parameters are only mildly raised :
1) Did you recently visit any high altitude area (mountainous areas like Ladakh/ Himalayas/ etc)
2) Any family history of similar altered parameters
3) Were these tests done: Renal function test, Pulmonary function test, 2D echo (cardiac), Ultrasound abdomen
4) Spo2 & BP need to be checked.
Once these can be answered, we can reach a diagnosis. First think of something basic. If all of above are either normal or negative, or show an increasing trend over weeks, then PV (Polycythemia Vera) can be diagnosed with simple tests and treated if symptomatic.
Your Hb level is not unusually high. Such reports are often seen.
Please get your Complete Blood Picture (showing size the RBCs and other parameters) and consult a General Physician with the reports.
Elevated hemoglobin can be caused by:
• Dehydration
• Chronic lung or heart conditions
• Living at high altitude
• Polycythemia vera (a bone marrow condition)
• Rarely, tumors producing excess erythropoietin
The EPO level at 4.19 mIU/mL is within normal limits, which makes a secondary EPO-driven cause less likely.
Next Steps
1. Repeat CBC and EPO after 2–4 weeks with good hydration.
2. Get arterial oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and possibly a chest X-ray to rule out chronic hypoxia.
3. If hemoglobin continues to rise, consult a hematologist for testing like JAK2 mutation (to rule out polycythemia vera).
4. Consider abdominal ultrasound if symptoms point toward kidney/liver mass.
Health Tips
• Stay well hydrated before testing to avoid falsely elevated values.
• Avoid self-medication or iron supplements unless prescribed.
• Keep a record of all past CBC values to track trends.
