I’ve been going through a very difficult period emotionally, and it has started affecting me mentally and physically. I’ve been feeling extremely overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, and unable to cope with things on my own. I’ve been crying almost every day and having difficulty sleeping. I keep overthinking and finding it very difficult to function normally or get through the day.
Recently, I’ve also been having suicidal thoughts, which is why I feel that I need professional help. I would like to consult a psychiatrist and understand what I’m going through and get appropriate help.

Hey.
The symptoms you are telling most likely fit under depression. And if you have reached the stage where you are getting suicidal thoughts then without any delay you should surely consult some psychiatrist. No need to worry it's treatable. All you have to do is consult the doctor and do not stop medications on your own once you start the treatment.

The symptoms you have described can occur in depression, although similar symptoms may also be seen with anxiety, stress, sleep disturbances, or other conditions.
The important factors are the duration, severity, and impact of these symptoms on your daily functioning. If these symptoms have been persistent for more than two weeks, are worsening, or are significantly affecting your routine, work, relationships, sleep, or appetite, they should be taken seriously.
Please also pay attention to any thoughts of hopelessness, self-harm, or suicide. If you are experiencing such thoughts, seek immediate professional help and do not remain alone.
Avoid starting or stopping psychiatric medication on your own, as treatment should be based on a proper clinical assessment.

What you're experiencing â persistent emotional exhaustion, daily crying, poor sleep, overthinking, and difficulty functioning â are classic symptoms of depression and/or anxiety that need proper attention. You don't have to cope with this alone.
Next Steps
Please consult a psychiatrist or psychologist for proper evaluation and support. Therapy (CBT) and/or medication can be very effective. Be kind to yourself â this is treatable. Consult me on Practo for further guidance.
First, recognizing that you need professional help and reaching out is a deeply important, brave step toward healing: what you are experiencing is a serious, treatable medical condition, and you do not have to carry this overwhelming weight alone.
The constellation of symptoms you describe—daily crying spells, severe emotional exhaustion, inability to cope, pervasive insomnia, intrusive overthinking, marked impairment in daily functioning, and emerging suicidal ideation—aligns with a Moderate to Severe Major Depressive Episode with prominent anxiety features.
When emotional stress becomes chronic, it depletes key neurotransmitters (like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine) and dysregulates the stress-response axis in the brain. This creates profound physical fatigue, disrupts sleep architecture, and makes the mind feel trapped in catastrophic overthinking. Depressive thoughts often falsely convince a person that things cannot improve, but with appropriate psychiatric care and therapeutic support, full recovery and emotional stability are entirely achievable.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychiatrist Promptly: Schedule an in-person or comprehensive tele-consultation with a psychiatrist. You can book a session with me.
Initiate Evidence-Based Psychotherapy: Once stabilized on medical therapy, begin sessions with a licensed Clinical Psychologist for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) to process underlying emotional triggers, manage overthinking, and build resilient coping mechanisms.
Basic Medical & Laboratory Workup: Ask your doctor to check baseline blood tests including Complete Blood Count (CBC), Thyroid Profile (TSH), Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D3, as nutritional and endocrine deficiencies frequently mimic or exacerbate depressive symptoms.
Health Tips
Absolute Word of Caution: Do not isolate yourself during this difficult period. Keeping suicidal thoughts or deep emotional exhaustion completely to yourself amplifies the burden. Sharing your feelings with a qualified mental health doctor or trusted loved one is the fastest way to start lifting this weight.
Lower Daily Expectations Temporarily: Give yourself permission to rest. Do not pressure yourself to perform at 100% right now—focus only on basic daily self-care (eating small regular meals, staying hydrated, resting) while treatment takes effect.
Avoid Substance Coping: Refrain from using alcohol, sedatives, or unprescribed sleeping aids to self-medicate, as they worsen depressive neurochemistry and disrupt restorative sleep architecture.
Thank you for sharing this. I know it isn't always easy to talk about personal struggles, so I'm glad you reached out.
I would recommend a detailed psychiatric consultation to understand the underlying cause and discuss the best treatment plan for you.
