Sore throat and dry cough are often viral, but check for fever, breathlessness or worsening symptoms. While breastfeeding, warm fluids, salt-water gargles and honey for you may help. Do not start a cough syrup or antibiotic without checking its ingredients; some sedating or decongestant medicines can affect milk supply or the baby. Book a Practo consultation for a breastfeeding-safe prescription, especially if symptoms last beyond 3–5 days.

For dry cough during breastfeeding, dextromethorphan is generally safe. Warm fluids/honey can also help. Avoid codeine-containing cough syrups. If cough persists or there is fever/breathlessness, consult a doctor.

You can usually manage a dry cough and sore throat while breastfeeding safely, but not every cough syrup is fine to take while you're nursing.
Next Steps
Ask your doctor or a pharmacist for a breastfeeding-safe option before taking anything, since some ingredients pass into breast milk.
Health Tips
Avoid picking a combination cold and cough medicine on your own, since many contain ingredients not confirmed safe for a nursing baby.
