I have developed a strange habit of masturbation before sleep and if avoided then I can't fall asleep. It hampers my routine where I have to masturbate even if I don't want to. I have been wanting to break the cycle of porn and masturbation but this is proving to be a tough challenge. I had an extremely difficult childhood and I am wondering if the urge stems from some unresolved childhood issues. I am looking to see if counselling can be helpful in this regard and what can be done to break this vicious cycle and gain back the mental strength where I dictate to my brain what I want and what not.

Yes, counseling can definitely help you break this cycle of compulsive masturbation and regain control over your habits. Since you’ve mentioned that you had a difficult childhood, it’s possible that this habit developed as a coping mechanism for emotional distress, stress, or loneliness. Many people use masturbation as a way to self-soothe, especially if they lacked emotional security growing up. However, when it becomes compulsive and starts controlling your routine instead of being a choice, it indicates a psychological dependence rather than just a physical habit.
To break this cycle, the focus should be on rewiring your brain and creating new sleep associations. Right now, your brain has linked masturbation as a requirement for sleep, so replacing it with healthier alternatives like meditation, breathing exercises, or physical relaxation techniques can help. Gradually delaying or reducing frequency rather than quitting abruptly also makes the process easier. Journaling, therapy, and uncovering the root emotional triggers will help you address any unresolved childhood issues that might be fueling this pattern. Hi,
It's commendable that you're seeking to address your feelings about masturbation and its impact on your routine, especially recognizing the potential roots in your childhood experiences. The habit you describe can sometimes stem from coping mechanisms developed in response to stress or unresolved emotional issues. Engaging with a counselor or therapist could indeed be beneficial. They can help you explore the underlying factors contributing to this behavior and provide strategies tailored to your situation.
Breaking the cycle may involve setting clear intentions and goals. Consider identifying triggers that lead to the urge and finding alternative activities to engage in before bed, such as reading, meditation, or gentle stretching. Practicing mindfulness can also help you become more aware of your thoughts and urges, allowing you to respond rather than react impulsively.
Support groups or online forums can provide additional encouragement and a sense of community. Remember, change takes time and patience, so be kind to yourself during this process. Developing a stronger sense of control over your choices is possible, and with the right support and techniques, you can regain that mental strength and create healthier habits.
Hi
That’s quite reflective of u. Very appreciative of you that you could dig in to ur childhood traumas. Yes, the former can be a factor of compulsive masturabation.
To be honest, masturabation is normal, if you don’t have a partner to get intimate with. Everyday masturabation is healthy. Watching porn and masturabation can only be a problem when it is hindering your everyday routine. Which means- if it’s hampering your work or daily life. But if it has been bothering you, then u can consult a psychologist for it.
A psychologist would dig in into ur childhood traumas and help you cope with ur past baggage’s. Also you could know where compulsive masturabation has stemmed from.
You can be comfortable in discussing ur issue.
