Yes it causes radiation but its minimal. Its ok for once in a while. If you are suffering eye or thyroid disorders then thyroid collors and eye protectors can be worn.
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been widely used in dental cilincs for over ten years. It is mainly used to create 3D image of oral and maxillofacial region to aid in a better diagnosis and thus a bette treatment.
The range of radiation dose in a CBCT is more than a normal dental xray and less than other CT scans done. So this is true it does cause radiation but the amount is less, moreover it is a great aid to the treatment that will be done by your orthodontist.
CBCT scans according to the the rules must be done with
1. Proper lead aprons
2. Tightly fitted thyroid collar around the neck
3. Leaded eye shields
4. the patient should not be pregnant
5. the medical history of the patient should be thoroughly checked
Following these guidelines given by the FDA the radiation dose reduces by 60 percent and thus provides a safe CBCT scan.
Next Steps
Whenever you go for a CBCT scan make sure you are given Lead Aprons, Thyroid collars, Eye shields to wear and then you can go ahead for this scan.
Health Tips
If the orthodontist has suggested you for this scan it might he/she would want to assess some teeth inside your bone or your skeletal region as a whole according to your age, so it will only help your orthodontist.
I don't think one CBCT will cause radiation affect to your eyes or thyroid. Now a days all machines are advanced with minimal radiation.
Nothing to worry.
