Braces are generally considered safe for MRI scans but they can cause image artifacts in certain. Metal braces especially may distort images of the head, face, brain, and cervical spine. Please inform the MRI technician that you have braces so they can be aware of the potential for image artifacts and adjust the scan parameters if necessary.

Yes, you can generally have an MRI scan even if you have a dental cap and braces, but there are a few things we need to be careful about. Your dental cap is usually not a problem—most crowns are made of ceramic or non-magnetic metal, which are MRI-safe. However, they might cause minor image distortion if the scan is focused around the face or jaw, but it’s rarely significant. Braces, on the other hand, can be more concerning. The metal in braces can cause artifacts (blurring or distortion) in MRI images, especially when the scan is of the brain or head area. This can make it harder for the radiologist to see certain parts of the brain clearly. In such cases, depending on how important the scan quality is, your doctor might suggest removing the braces temporarily. But this is only when absolutely necessary. What you should do: • Inform your MRI technician and your treating doctor about your dental crown and braces in advance. • They can decide if the scan can still give reliable results or if any adjustments are needed.
