Can I check HbA1c to know if I am diabetic, normal, or pre-diabetic?
Hello Doctor,
I recently got a Complete Blood Count (CBC) test done (report attached). I would like to check my HbA1c to understand whether I am diabetic, prediabetic, or normal.
Based on my CBC values, is it okay for me to go ahead and get an HbA1c test now, or should I wait?
Please review the attached CBC report and guide me.will I get accurate?
Thank you.

1. Can you do HbA1c now?
Yes — you can do it right now.
Your CBC values are completely normal, and nothing in this report will affect the HbA1c result.
HbA1c depends on the average blood sugar of the last 3 months.
It is not affected by:
• Normal hemoglobin
• Normal RBC count
• Normal MCV
• Normal WBC
• Normal platelets
So you can safely go ahead.
2. Will your HbA1c result be accurate?
HbA1c becomes unreliable only when someone has:
• Very low hemoglobin
• Iron deficiency
• Kidney failure
• Blood transfusion
• Thalassemia major
• Hemolysis
• Sickle cell disease
Your report shows:
• Hemoglobin = 14.9 (normal)
• MCV = 83.4 (normal)
• PCV = normal
• RBC count = normal
• RDW = normal
• Mentzer Index = 15.5 (slightly high but still okay)
• No signs of anemia
• No signs of thalassemia in RBC shape
This means your red blood cells are normal, so HbA1c will give a reliable reading.
3. Your CBC actually suggests very good blood health
In simple words:
Your blood count is perfectly healthy, and there is no anemia, no infection, no deficiency, and no blood disorder that would interfere with HbA1c accuracy.
Next Steps
You can immediately get HbA1c done to check:
• Normal: below 5.7
• Prediabetes: 5.7–6.4
• Diabetes: 6.5 or above
You can also add:
• Fasting glucose
• Post-meal glucose
This will give a complete picture.
