Can a psychologist estimate the number of therapy sessions?
I have been struggling with compulsive masturbation behaviour. I had 4 therapy sessions at a government hospital and also received therapy from a psychiatrist, but neither helped.
I’m considering seeing a private psychologist. Is it appropriate to ask them, “Approximately how many therapy sessions might I need for my problem?”
Can a psychologist usually give an approximate estimate after assessing the problem, or is it not possible to estimate beforehand?

Absolutely, you can ask! But they can only give an estimate after the initial full assessment.
Think of it like a mechanic: They can't tell you how long a repair takes until they pop the hood and see exactly what's broken. You had 4 sessions before, which is like putting a tiny bandage on a deep wound—it wasn't enough time to heal.

Thank you for asking. Yes, it is absolutely appropriate to ask a psychologist about the approximate number of sessions you may need. It is a reasonable question, especially when you are planning your time and finances.
However, there is no standard number of sessions for a particular problem. The duration depends on the nature of the difficulty, its severity and duration, other factors affecting the problem, and importantly, how you respond to and engage with therapy.
After taking a detailed history and completing an initial assessment, a psychologist may be able to give you a rough treatment plan or an initial estimate, for example, “Let us review your progress after 4–6 sessions.” This is an estimate rather than a guarantee.

Yes, it’s completely appropriate to ask about an approximate number of sessions. The exact duration depends on the concern, its severity, underlying factors, and how you respond to therapy. Four sessions may simply not have been enough to understand the pattern and work on it meaningfully.

If you’d like, you can book an initial session with me. We can first understand the compulsive behaviour and your previous therapy experience, and then discuss a realistic therapy plan and expected timeline.
Yes, a psychologist can give a rough estimate after assessing the concern, but the exact number depends on the person’s goals, progress and response to therapy
It totally depends on the counsellor’s capabilities and since masturbation is a chronic problem, it might take approximately one year to come clean out of the habit.
I understand that this situation is causing you significant distress. Your feelings are valid, and we can work together to understand what is triggering these emotions and develop healthier ways of coping.
Hi
Thank you for sharing your concern. Yes, a psychologist can estimate the number of therapy sessions based on available research data and therapy guidelines. However, actual therapy sessions depend on multiple factors, including therapy progress, as every client is unique due to subjective experiences.
