Based on the details shared, your father’s condition seems to involve cervical disc issues at C5-C6 and C6-C7, leading to nerve compression, which might explain the pain, discomfort, and limited mobility.
Here’s an overview of physiotherapy advice and other considerations:
---
1. Cervical Traction:
Effectiveness:
Cervical traction is commonly used for conditions like cervical radiculopathy caused by herniated discs. It gently decompresses the cervical spine, relieving pressure on the nerves.
It’s generally safe when administered under professional supervision.
Overuse or incorrect application can worsen symptoms, so traction should always be prescribed and monitored by a qualified physiotherapist.
Session Frequency:
Traction is typically recommended in short sessions, 10–15 minutes, with a controlled pull weight (starting at a lighter pull).
Side Effects:
If cervical traction causes increased pain, dizziness, or discomfort, it should be stopped, and alternative therapies explored.
---
2. Pain Management Without Surgery:
Manual Therapy:
Gentle mobilization techniques to improve neck movement and reduce stiffness.
Postural Correction:
Educating proper ergonomics while sitting or standing to reduce pressure on the cervical spine.
Encourage the use of a cervical collar temporarily to support the neck during acute pain.
Therapeutic Exercises:
Neck Isometrics: Press against your hand without moving your neck to strengthen stabilizing muscles.
Chin Tucks: Sit upright, gently tuck your chin backward (creating a “double chin” effect). Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times.
Shoulder Rolls and Scapular Squeezes: To reduce upper back tension.
Heat/Ice Therapy:
Use heat to relax tight muscles or ice to reduce nerve inflammation.
---
3. Considerations for Surgery:
If surgery becomes necessary, it will likely be for conditions such as:
Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF):
Removal of the herniated disc with possible fusion of vertebrae.
This is typically a moderate-to-major surgery.
Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement:
Replacing the damaged disc with an artificial one.
Cost:
In India, the cost of such surgeries can range between ₹1,50,000 to ₹4,00,000, depending on the hospital and surgeon's expertise.
---
4. Monitoring Diabetes and Hypertension:
Your father’s pre-existing conditions (diabetes and high BP) need to be well-controlled before surgery or intensive therapies to reduce the risk of complications. Consult with his physician regarding pre-surgical fitness if required.
---
5. Next Steps:
Physiotherapy First: Explore a comprehensive physiotherapy program to delay or avoid surgery, especially when no significant pain exists in the sleeping position.
Regular Follow-Up: Ensure periodic reassessment of his condition with a neurologist or spine specialist.

Consult physiotherapist for proper assessment
As you mentioned, your father has disc compression so further treatment will help your father
Cervical traction for disc compression
IRR for pain relief in sitting position
TENS for tingling/ Numbness
A comprehensive rehabilitation program, including gentle neck mobility exercises, postural training, and strengthening exercises for neck and shoulder muscles, can be beneficial.
Heat or cold therapy, TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), and manual therapy techniques may also help manage symptoms.
Next Steps
Seek a second opinion from a spine specialist or neurologist if there is confusion about the traction therapy or surgery plan.
Ensure a balanced approach by combining medical, therapeutic, and lifestyle interventions to optimize recovery.
Health Tips
It is essential to understand whether the surgery will be minimally invasive or involve major reconstruction. This depends on the severity of the disc pathology and nerve compression.
Costs and risks should be discussed with the treating neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon.
Traction can be given but depends on the conditon, along with traction, ift and swd will help reduce the pain.
Kindly do share the X-ray or MRI films if you have, so that i can suggest which actual device to be used, as there are other afvajced methods/equipments availble to avoid surgery.
Cervical traction, myofascial release of cervicothoracic area, neural stretch, these are some methods under physiotherapy that will give relieve to your father
Greetings from Rid of Pain Physiotherapy
It's difficult to comment if your father can be improved with surgery or can be recovered without surgery. That can be defined only after examination. If you opt for surgery, then also need to take physiotherapy before that and after that for the faster n better recovery. First of all try with the physiotherapy before opting for surgery.
Hi, your father is having a radiating pain in his right hand which is coming from multiple nerve compression around his cervical spine. after prescribed medications his pain and inflammation is reduced. hence he feels no pain in lying down because your spine is not carrying any weight while sleeping. and during sitting your spine is most loaded hence it triggers the nerves and causes pain.
kindly get a consultation done so that we can identify if the condition can be treated with physiotherapy so that no surgery is required.
traction is a modality used to relieve some pressure from cervical spine leading to temporary relief in his pain but it will reoccur if we don't treat his root cause. and therapeutic exercises and spine rehab will help him to get better fully. contact us and understand more about it.
Health Tips
Avoid prolonged sitting and sofa sitting, avoid carrying weight more than 2 kgs. use a cervical pillow
Yes traction can be given. Along with traction , IFT and neck shoulder strengthening exercises advised. As for surgery cost please consult orthopaedic surgeon
