Breast feeding
How long a breast feed session go on? I try to breastfeed my 1.5 month old baby. He dozes off to sleep after sucking for 5 mins & then wakes up again in 5-10 mins. This makes breast feeding quite long like 1-2 hr. Ultimately I have to give him toned milk using bottle. Due to this my milk supply is very low & he is surviving on toned milk instead of breastfeed.

Dear parents,        Breast milk is Amrit. Breast feeding is an art, hold the baby in one arm keeping his head at elbow joint and the buttocks in the palm of same arm, don't keep baby in lap. Start feeding the baby, hold the outer palm of baby in between the thumb &index Fingerof  mother, put pressure when ever baby sleep or stop feeding, feed baby for 15to20minutes. After feeding put the baby on left shoulder and pat just behind stomach level for 5mintues, baby burp 3to5times. Now lay the baby on right side of baby, putting a small pillow under the head so that head is above level of stomach. Sucking increases the production of milk as per demand of baby, giving top milk makes a baby lazy. Sucking increases prolactin harmone which increases milk production . Sucking increases oxytocin harmone release.this release milk on demand.

Cows milk is not good for babies till 1 year of age. Breastmilk is best for the baby. However if your milk supply is low, you may supplement with formula milk (using wati-spoon). Every baby takes his own time to feed. Babies also keep suckling after their tummy is full just for comfort. Ideally baby should be fed on one breast for minimum 25-30 mins and then switch over to the other breast. If at the end of feed, your breast still feels heavy, express milk and feed to the baby by spoon/wati. The more emptier breasts become and more baby suckles at breast , milk supply will increase accordingly. Maintain a balanced diet. You may take Lactare capsules (2 capsules three times daily for 10 days) to boost milk supply.
Next Steps
Meet a lactation nurse / consultant for learning correct position, latching techniques, correct expressing techniques for breastfeeding.
