Hello Ma’am,
Iron tablets often cause gastric irritation, black stools, and stomach discomfort, which are common side effects and not harmful. Since your ECG, liver, kidney, and sugar are normal, continuing iron with proper timing and diet is usually safe, though adjustments can be made if gastric issues worsen.

Taking Ferivate XT as prescribed for low iron is generally safe, and experiencing dark stools is a normal side effect of oral iron therapy. Gastric irritation, bloating, and constipation are also frequent side effects. If the medication causes significant gastric upset or is not well-tolerated, it may be advisable to discuss alternatives or dosing adjustments with a healthcare provider
Next Steps
Continue taking Ferivate XT as per the doctor’s instruction, preferably with food to reduce stomach irritation.
Do periodic monitoring of iron and vitamin B12 levels, as mentioned; monitor for symptom improvement.
Increase dietary intake of iron-rich foods (meat, leafy greens, legumes) and vitamin B12 (animal foods, supplements if vegetarian).
If the gastric symptoms or black stools worsen, become tarry, or there is visible blood, consult a physician immediately to rule out gastrointestinal bleeding.
Discuss with the doctor about the possibility of parenteral (injection) iron or vitamin B12 supplementation if oral therapy is not tolerated.
Health Tips
Always inform the doctor about persistent GI side effects, very dark/tarry stools, or new symptoms like dizziness, weakness, or ongoing gastrointestinal pain.
Avoid taking iron supplements with tea/coffee, antacids, or calcium, as they can reduce absorption.
Vitamin B12 supplementation may be needed if deficiency persists, especially if there is poor dietary intake or absorption problems.
Stay hydrated and consider adding fiber to reduce constipation.
Black stool is due to iron tablets which you are taking. If you don't have any other symptoms and if other parameters are normal no need to worry. But on the safer side also consult your gastroeneterologist along with your reports in person in whichever city you reside. Thanks and Regards.
