Black stool
Sir,  I had a little black stool followed by normal color stool at about 9 AM on 19 August 2026. Then I didn't poop till 10 PM of 20 August 2026. That time stool was black and a little hard (constipation type texture). On the next day 21 August 2026 at about 9 AM stool was a little soft and normal color. On 22 August at 2PM though I didn't have much urge to poop but I pooped a little amount and color was normal. On 23 August at about 10 AM stool amount and color normal. I didn't take any iron tablets during that episode.  I had taken a little nan and a little chili paneer in lunch on 19 August. On 20 August I had taken 2 cups of tea without milk. Could that black stool episode be due to cancer bleeding?

Please do not worry, cancer bleeding is very unlikely in what you have described. True bleeding from the stomach (melena) is jet black, sticky, tarry and foul smelling, it usually continues over several motions, and it comes with weakness, giddiness, palpitations or paleness. Your episode was a small amount of dark stool for one or two motions, the stool turned normal on its own from the very next day, and you have felt otherwise well, which fits far better with a food or constipation related colour change. Dark green leafy food, chocolate, beetroot, jaggery, black tea, bismuth or charcoal preparations, and stool that has stayed long in the bowel during constipation can all look blackish. Since you had gone almost a day and a half without passing motion, that hard dark stool is quite explainable. Keep your water intake at 3 litres, take fibre in the form of fruit, vegetables and psyllium husk at night, and avoid straining. For your peace of mind it is reasonable to get a simple stool occult blood test and a CBC to check haemoglobin; if both are normal, no further testing is needed. If the black tarry stool comes back, or you notice vomiting of blood or coffee ground material, fresh red blood, weakness, giddiness, weight loss, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing or persistent upper abdominal pain, then please see a doctor promptly as an endoscopy would be indicated. Also avoid painkillers like ibuprofen or diclofenac and alcohol, as they irritate the stomach lining. Happy to review this with you on a consult here (fee Rs 500) if you wish.
