Antidepressants are research proven effective medication for depression and anxiety. They are certainly not a placebo. Research shows that depressed and anxious individuals have low levels of a brain neurotransmitter called serotonin, among others. Antidepressants like escitalopram work by increasing the brain levels of serotonin. Escitalopram is one of the most widely used antidepressants and is very effective in treating signs of depression. You can check the STAR*D trial..one of the largest research studies of antidepressants.

They are definitely not placebo. They work. This has been proved world wide in thousands of double blinded RCTS. They are in the treatment protocol for depression intact treatment of choice for moderate to severe depression and have saved lives of millions who might have ended their lives from depression. But about 5% of people have treatment resistant depression. Also not all antidepressants work for all. There are multiple factors involved. Escitalopram is a god antidepressant and has to be taken as per psychiatrist advice.
