Vitamin d deficiency

2026-09-18 19:51:04
Hi, My Vitamin D level was 28 (insufficient), doctor prescribed 60,000 IU weekly for 8 weeks. After taking 3 doses, I noticed my heart rate goes above 100 bpm for 2-3 days after each dose. Should I stop this and switch to a lower daily dose instead? Please advise. Thanks

Merely maintaining your vitamin d concentration to the optimal level does not guarantee having the right proportion of calcium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract it is the Alpha 125 dihydroxy chole calciferol which determines the adequate amount of calcium that will be formed from gastrointestinal track to the blood stream so it is a complex mechanism please have clinical consultation and come out with the myth that if you will have the normal vitamin d concentration you will have normal calcium metabolism in the body

Vitamin D may not be the only reason for the fast heartbeat. Thyroid levels or other causes should also be checked.
Next Steps
Check TSH, ECG and calcium/electrolytes and consult your doctor before changing the Vitamin D dose.

It could be non clinical anticipatory anxiety, where you feel like when you have vit d, your heart rate will increase, so it does. Try to make yourself understand that this is something is your control and dont overthink it. But heartrate increased for 2-3 days above 100 is not normal in certain circumstances. For eg, how high is it? Is it high throughout the day? Get a consultation now on Practo app for more detailed counselling. I can advice whether or not you should get an ecg done.

As there is no connection between vit d3 to increase in heart rate but still we can't ignore the symptoms because it can be cause by another problems also. Like dehydration, caffeine intake etc. As your vit d3 level is 28ng/ml and also your 3 doses are completed you should have to check the vit d3 level again to exclude any vitd3 excess.
Next Steps
you should have to stop the medicine until you consult the doctor to assure that there is no problem.doctor will suggest that you have to take low dose or not. na
Health Tips
stay hydrated and keep monitoring of your health status.

A faster heart rate after starting treatment should not be ignored. Vitamin D 60,000 IU weekly is commonly used for 6–8 weeks, but palpitations may have another cause. Please check your pulse during episodes and review your thyroid medicine dose, caffeine and other triggers. Do not change the dose without your doctor’s advice.
Next Steps
Please arrange a review soon with an ECG and thyroid tests (TSH, free T4), especially since you take Thyronorm. Seek urgent care if the pulse stays above 120, or if you develop chest pain, breathlessness, fainting or severe dizziness. You may book a Practo consult or visit me at Synergy Multispeciality Hospital, Miraj.

First of all Hello Dr Usha This side Potential cause of your increased Heart rate is : 1. Mild hypercalcemia or electrolyte shift : High volume dose of vitamin D increases calcium absorption which sometimes appears to influence cardiac rhythm in some persons 2. Some coinciding environmental or lifestyle triggers: like dehydration, high caffeine consumption, lack of sleep or minor thyroid shifts might coincide with the dosing 3. May be some physiological anxiety 4. Based on your detail that the baseline heart rate is normally fine outside of those specific 2,3 days following the dose a primary underlying heart disease is indeed less likely .
Next Steps
I would suggest you to switch to a low dose daily supplement instead of taking a massive 60,000iu dose once a week to the dose can be 5000iu per day An a few blood tests:: 1. Serum calcium 2. Serum Magnesium 3. Serum potassium n rest all basic serum electrolytes 4. ECG 5. CBC to look for anemia 6. Thyroid test
Health Tips
Do a basic tracking of your vitals for few days , Hope my explanation will help you n if you feel unwell at any point seek immediate medical care n assistance

It is best to hold off on the 60,000 IU weekly dose for now, since you are not severely deficient for Vitamin D3, there is no such urgent need to take such high dose. U can switch to a weekly oral dose of 4000IU. U must get a repeat Serum Vitamin D3 checked, and then we can plan your further course of supplementation.
Next Steps
Lab Work: Get an ECG done on urgent basis, to rule out any cardiac problem. Get your Thyroid profile done, since you are on Thyronorm(levothyroxine), u should know that excess of thyroid hormone can alse raise heart rate. If any abnormality detected, we can change your medication dose. Also get your Serum electrolytes checked.
Health Tips
If you experience increased sweating, palpitations(feeling of heart beating through your chest), chest pain, Anxiety, increased or reduced appetite, dizziness, weakness , immediately approach your nearest medical facility. Lifestyle Adjustment: Avoid Caffeine(coffee, tea, coke, energy drinks). Take good sleep. Reduce stress.

Greetings, The palpitations since 2,3 days might have other cause apart from Vit. D intake. Also, since you are on thyronorm, please opt. For basic examination, blood investigation, thyroid profile and ECG, if needed, too.
Next Steps
Kindly consult, and don't self change the dosage or take any random Medicines on your own. Hope this helps!

A high-dose bolus like 60,000 IU of Vitamin D can occasionally trigger transient autonomic sensitivity, palpitations, or tachycardia in susceptible individuals, particularly if serum calcium shifts rapidly or if underlying magnesium levels are low. Since your baseline Vitamin D level was 28 ng/mL (mild insufficiency, very close to the sufficient threshold of 30 ng/mL), an aggressive weekly mega-dose is not strictly necessary. Switching to a steady daily physiological maintenance dose is a safer and much better-tolerated strategy for your heart rate.
Next Steps
Pause the weekly 60,000 IU doses immediately and let your resting pulse rate stabilize over the next few days. Get your serum calcium, electrolytes, and thyroid panel (TSH/Free T4) checked to ensure your Thyronorm dosage (12.5 mcg) is well-balanced. Please book an online consultation with me. so, we can review your lab results and transition you smoothly to an appropriate daily regimen.
Health Tips
Take daily Vitamin D with your largest, fat-containing meal of the day to ensure optimal absorption without overloading your system. Ensure adequate dietary magnesium (nuts, seeds, leafy greens), as magnesium is required to activate Vitamin D and maintain a calm heart rhythm. Seek immediate in-person medical attention if your heart rate remains persistently above 100 bpm at rest, or if you develop chest discomfort, lightheadedness, or shortness of breath.

You should let your prescribing doctor know about this heart rate rise before your next dose, especially since you're already on thyroid medication.
Next Steps
Ask about checking your thyroid levels alongside this, since palpitations can sometimes point to a thyroid dose that needs adjusting rather than the vitamin D itself.
Health Tips
Please don't switch to a different dose or schedule on your own until your doctor has reviewed this.
