Stiff back upon standing after sitting

2024-11-29 23:47:11
When I stand up after being sitting for some time my lower back gets stiff and I'm not able to stand straight. It takes some time to get to normal posture. I do work out but have a desk job. I'm 174cm tall with weight of around 68 kg. Please advise.

You have to do exercises for your back. Please get your plain X ray of the Lumbosacral region (AP and Lateral) and consult an Orthopedic surgeon regarding what all exercises can be performed by you.

Hello. It is also important to know since when the pain is persisting and how severe the pain is. As you are telling it is affecting your posture then it must be severe. Your weight is also not an issue here. Most probably you have strained a muscle during work out. You will need to take electrolytes and also a muscle relaxant for this to go down. Take an injection if the pain is too much to handle.
Health Tips
avoid lifting weight and any exercise for atleast a week.

Hello, I am Dr. Agniva Ghosh Dastidar, practising Orthopaedic surgeon. The problem you're referring to is very common in your age group. Some other information will be helpful to reach a diagnosis. Does the stiffness increase after getting up from a lying down posture? Does it increase during winter period? Do you have history of lifting heavy weight? Is there history or Arthritis in your family
Next Steps
Get a Digital xray done for lumbo-sacral spine in AP and lateral view. Start spinal stretching exercises. https://youtu.be/n6Etl3x9AnU?si=xnEs1ffsVH0gv0jF You can try the exercises in this link or search for other ones in YouTube.
Health Tips
Strictly avoid forward bending in a standing posture, lifting heavy weight and sitting on floor or squatting

Ankylosing spondylosis would be among my differentials. Would need more history and investigations to arrive at a diagnosis.
Next Steps
1. consult a qualified orthopedician 2. avoid long hours of sitting or standing. allow movement in your day. 3. use warm baths twice a day to relax the muscles on your back
Health Tips
desk jobs do cause a lot of back stiffness, there are muscle relaxanats and other supportive measures like abdominal binders that you can use but consult an orthopaedic surgeon to get yourself fully evaluated.
