Hello, I have high hemoglobin of around 18 , is there any way to reduce it. I am also a smoker . Does smoking increases hemoglobin levels and are there any medications to reduce it

Smoke increase the thickness of blood so hb increases. + Chronic illness It's treated by md physician by 'phlebotomy'just as outdoor procedure. Than they ask how to maintain. One i know is just quite the smoke.

If you do not have any symptoms and any other major chronic illness there isn't much you need to do. The cause of high Hb can be evaluated for further reassurance. Smoking needs to go out of picture for obvious reasons. You should donate blood if possible. Avoid smoking on the day of donation. If blood donation is not possible, go to a hospital for phlebotomy. If symptoms are present or if any chronic disease is present, an Hb of 18 requires further evaluation and treatment.

Yes. Smoking causes hypoxia. So theoretically it may increase Haemoglobin. Please consult a Haematologist in your area. My worry is about Polycythemia which needs proper evaluation.

This hemoglobin amount is not an issue until you have symptoms asaociated with it. Like itching on bathing with warm water, fatigue etc. If no, then this value is not much of an issue. And yes foe confirmation please chck your EPO levels. That will give a clear picture of the scenario
