Hello, thanks for writing in. Good that you stopped and asked instead of pushing through the discomfort.
These supplements are generally safe when taken at the right dose, and
calcium,
vitamin D3,
B12, magnesium and zinc are all commonly used for deficiency and hair fall. Bloating and acidity are the most common complaints, especially when taken on an empty stomach, because calcium, magnesium and zinc can irritate the stomach. They don't directly cause weight gain. Please also keep in mind that hair fall takes time to improve, usually 2 to 3 months after the levels are corrected, and low
vitamin D isn't always the only cause.
Next Steps
Don't stop completely. Deficiencies need steady correction, and alternate days is usually not enough. Instead, try taking the supplement right after a meal, or ask your doctor whether the dose can be split (for example, half after lunch and half after dinner). If the acidity and bloating still continue, tell your doctor, as a different form or brand may suit you better. It's also worth checking hemoglobin,
ferritin (iron stores) and
thyroid (
TSH), because these are very common reasons for hair fall in women. Retest
vitamin D and
B12 after about 3 months.
Health Tips
- Take it after food with a full glass of water, not on an empty stomach
- Avoid taking it together with tea or coffee, and keep a 2 to 4 hour gap from iron or
thyroid tablets
- Eat protein at every meal (dal, eggs, paneer, curd, sprouts), since hair needs it
- Get 15 to 20 minutes of morning sunlight a few days a week
- Avoid harsh hair treatments and tight hairstyles
- Sleep well and manage stress, as both strongly affect hair fall
If you're still worried, do book a consult and we can look at it together. Take care.
