Exercise after L5 S1 disc herniation

2021-11-20 07:23:07
I suffered slip disc in July 2021. I had mild pain in left hip and left leg. After 3 months of physiotherapy and exercises I am 95% pain free and comfortable. When can I start lifting weights as I am a gym enthusiast and used to lift before my injury.

You should hire an experienced personal trainer to do weight lifting and body building. You should start lifting the weights gradually with proper guidance. You should also continue with the back stretching and strengthening exercises once in a day.

If there is a herniated disc with annular tear, lifting is to be completely avoided. In case of loading with back supported as with leg press the range of knee bending has to be controlled. Barbell lifting could be risky and based in your pelvic control and muscle tightness. Lifting with bending forward is the most risky movement. However this movement could be eventually restored with training using low weights. However individual lifting capacities differ and there is no 1 size fits all.
