The sudden severe back pain might be due to back muscle strain or spasm or disc problem. I would like to know whether the pain is only on the low back does it radiates? Whether it is continuous? Which action increases the pain and on which activity the pain reduces?
Next Steps
Ask her to take complete bed rest for 1 week. She should avoid getting up straight from the bed, should turn to one side while getting up. She should avoid bending forward, lifting weights. She can lie on her back with knee bent position supported with pillows underneath and she can also lie on her sides. Should sit with back support. Avoid standing for long time. Can use any diclofenac gel on her back provided she is not allergic.
Health Tips
If the pain persists or aggrevates she should consult a Physician or Physiotherapist or Orthopaedic surgeon for further evaluation.

The pain is in all probability due to bending of the spine beyond the available flexibility and thus stretching the stiff muscles. The stiffness occurs due to our sedentary lifestyle and lack of enough thrust of flexibility.

Have you changed the mattress recently? Is the pain all over the back, is it more on the right or left side? Is the pain there constantly, or comes only with certain positions and activities? What exactly increases or relieves her pain?
Next Steps
Avoid any position or activity that increases the pain and take muscle relaxants.

It may be due to muscular pull or disc problem. Consult orthopaedic dr. Physio in the form of IFT and usg massage might help. Muscle relaxant and mild painkillers might help. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration because dehydrated disc is more prone to injury or buldge. Once pain settles do back muscle exercises. Don’t bend or lift weight now.
