Hi I recently had an ACL reconstruction operation. Like yesterday.. There is lot of pain.. However when I do the exercises physiotherapist suggested, the pain reduces. Due to this I keep doing these exercises more than what the physio prescribed. Is it OK.. If not what is the limit

Getting reviews on public forum is not the best way to get your Physiotherapy needs fulfilled. Post op Physiotherapy is quite demanding. Please don't get confused with multiple options. All the Physiotherapists are right in their way. Just follow what your surgeon and your Physiotherapist has to say.

Its good to do exercises if helping to relieve pain as well as strengthening your muscles. You can do a few static exercises (which don't move your leg side by side increase your muscle strength as well as decrease the pain like pressing the towel roll & pressing the bed with the heel) more than your physiotherapist suggested to you but its not good to do all the exercises too much as it may create problem if done in excess, or can lead to muscle soreness later on.
Next Steps
You should ask your therapist to do one more session if muscles of your knee allow.
Health Tips
You should do static exercises, cold pack application, mild bending and straightening of your knee for relaxation....Avoid hanging of leg, don't try to do low sitting, squatting &cross your legs...Get Well Soon!

Over exercises can delay healing as muscles are cut during the operation it needs proper rest to recover. For pain relief u can rely on other modules like icepack also. Do exercises only that much that are prescribed only. Consult us at www.physiotherapistdelhi.in/skype-consultation

Avoid sitting Cross legged. Avoid Squatting- Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams Stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports Taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area Contrast Fomentation (Hot and Cold).

Doing exercise more than limit as u said, is depends on soft tissue tolerance level, muscle fatique level. I think your soft tissue and muscle fatique tolerance level is increases so that you are not geting pain. So you can do no of repetation as your tolerace.

only do those exercises which your physio suggest. Over exercise makes the muscle fatigue ,which can harm your acl reconstruction.
