MY MOTHER IS ON A WALKER AFTER KNEE REPLACEMENT BY THIS DOCTOR
Since 2010 my mother had knee pain in both knees. In 2016-17 the pain grew more severe, she was in her early 70s, had diabetes and other health issues. She was also overweight. She was walking slowly due to her knee pain and used a walking stick, she would walk slowly, using the stick.
Three years ago, as a family we decided that she needed to go in for knee replacement surgery in order to be independent. This was also recommended by a friend whose mother underwent the surgery and then walked independently.
Dr. Iyengar was recommended to us by neighbours and relatives as being one of the best in the field. An added benefit was that his clinic was near our residence.
During the second consultation (in the first one he asked us to get x-rays of her knees), he told us that if my mother did not undergo Total Knee replacement Surgery (TKS), she would be immobile and bed-ridden in a few years.
So we thought, this was the only option left, especially coming from such a senior doctor. I specifically asked him if my mom's weight would be a problem to a successful recovery and he categorically said No.
We took his advice and set the dates for the operation at the Kaade hospital, Manjunathnagar, Bangalore. The doctor operates there. We did not go in for a second opinion ** **** ** ******* **** ** ****** ** ******* **** ***** ** **** ******** ************The surgery on the left knee was done first, then the doctor decided that it is better that the surgery on the right knee should be done after a couple of days. The second operation was completed two days later.
I would like to mention that the Kaade hospital was good in most respects- nurses, resident doctors, dietician, etc.
After the surgery was complete and my mother recuperated at home for a few days, we went to Dr. Iyengar's clinic for post operative consultation. Before meeting him in person, his assistant Nandish * *** ****** ** *** **** * ***** 'inspected' my mothers leg. in the process, this fellow bent her knee forcefully, my mother was in agony and this fellow acted as if it was
a normal process. The doctor did not say anything to this either when we reported to him. My mother was so traumatized that she did not want to go back to the clinic.
During that visit, Dr. Iyengar did not recommend physiotherapy, don't understand why. He just recommended basic exercises.
He also said that she was over weight before the surgery and should have reduced her weight before the operation. This was completely took us by surprise, because he was the one who said that the weight was not an issue prior to the surgery!
After that we lost faith in him, In the subsequent months, my mother fell down a few times because he left knee buckled all of a sudden. She lost all confidence in walking independently and started using a walker fulltime.
The point of the surgery was to be independent of walkers and walking sticks.
Several months later, I took my mother to two other ********* orthopedic surgeon* **** ** **** ****** **** *** **** **** ****** ********** ** *** **** ** *** ******* *** ******* **** *** ******** ****.
My mother has refused to go through surgery. Today she is entirely dependent on the walker and walking stick and my family's physical support.
This is the state of affairs.
Here is my opinion:
Dr. Iyengar may be a great consulting doctor *** *** ******** ****** ****** ** ******* He didn't bother to follow up on my mother's condition ever since the surgery through phone calls or emails. ***** ******* **** **** ***** ********* ********** ***** **** * ***** *** ****** ********
I made a mistake in not taking a second opinion ** * ******** **** ** ****** ** ******* I would advise you to please do so.
My father is angry at Dr. Iyengar, but my father is helpless.

Please learn from my experience- always get a second opinion and then make a judgement call about any doctor- regardless of how experienced they are or claim to be.

My family & me including my Dad of 85years & mother of 80years have been consulting with Dr Iyengar over 15years. A Doctor par excellence in his field coupled with a humane attitude. He listens to the issues very patiently & empathetically. He goes to extreme pains to explain the issue, convince the patient to his entire satisfaction & prescribing medicines including nutrition very prudently. His diagnosis has been 100% accurate for all in our family . Only once in all these years did he suggest an MRI for a sports injury of my Son & this too since we insisted as my son wanted to get back to playing football urgently. It is simply as if the Musculo-Skeletal-Nervnine system 'speaks' to him & so does not believe in X-rays & MRI's.A very rare breed of Doctors in the present times.
We pray to God that the Doc be blessed with his choicest blessings!!
