A vitamin B12 level of 102 pg/mL is quite low and indicates a deficiency. Here’s a treatment plan and dietary recommendations:
Treatment
1. Vitamin B12 Supplements:
• Oral Supplements: You can start with high-dose oral vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin) supplements. Typically, doses of 1,000 to 2,000 micrograms per day are recommended initially.
• Injections: If the deficiency is severe or if there is an absorption issue (e.g., pernicious anemia), intramuscular or subcutaneous injections of vitamin B12 may be necessary. The typical regimen is 1,000 micrograms once a week for 4-6 weeks, then monthly as needed.
Next Steps
