Unpredictable sleep walking at nights
I randomly sleep walk or shout at night that I have no idea of me doing, only when someone says in the morning i know things have happened. Of all the incidents I've not hurt myself or others. Somehow the brain knows where things are and dodge fans etc.  How to prevent it from happening since I have no control and why does it happens? I'm confused.

Your symptoms suggest a parasomnia, most likely sleepwalking with sleep talking, occurring during deep sleep. It happens due to incomplete arousal of the brain, often triggered by stress, sleep deprivation, irregular sleep, or alcohol. Maintain strict sleep routine, ensure adequate sleep, avoid late-night screens and substances, and keep environment safe. If frequent or worsening, consult a psychiatrist/sleep specialist—evaluation and, if needed, medication can help control these episodes.

I want to acknowledge how much courage it takes to voice these struggles. Often, we treat mental health as a matter of 'willpower,' but as a physician, I can tell you that what you are experiencing has a real biological and neurological basis. Your brain, like any other organ, can sometimes struggle to maintain balance under stress. Seeking treatment isn't a sign of failure; it’s a proactive medical decision to regain your quality of life. We can work together to understand the 'why' behind these feelings and find a structured path back to your baseline. You don't have to navigate this alone.

Sometimes people may walk, talk, or shout during sleep without realizing it; this is called Sleepwalking. It happens when the brain is only partly awake during deep sleep, so the body can move while the mind is still asleep, which is why a person may avoid objects or walk around but have no memory of it the next morning. These episodes can be triggered by lack of sleep, stress, irregular sleep schedules, alcohol, fever, or certain medicines. In most cases it is harmless, especially if no one gets hurt, but it can often be reduced by maintaining regular sleep timings, getting enough sleep, reducing stress, and avoiding alcohol before bedtime. If the episodes become frequent, very loud, or risky, it is better to consult a doctor to rule out other sleep problems such as REM Sleep Behavior Disorder or Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Sleepwalking (somnambulism) happens when the brain partially wakes from deep non-REM sleep, so the body can move while awareness is absent. Because of this, people may walk, talk, or even avoid obstacles but have no memory the next morning. Common triggers include sleep deprivation, stress, irregular sleep schedule, alcohol, fever, or certain medications. What helps reduce episodes: • Maintain regular sleep timing • Ensure adequate sleep • Reduce stress • Avoid alcohol/heavy meals before bedtime • Keep the sleep environment safe (lock doors/windows, remove sharp objects) If episodes are frequent, violent, or increasing, a sleep evaluation is recommended to rule out conditions like REM sleep behavior disorder, seizures, or obstructive sleep apnea.
