Hi, Both have similarities as well as differences too. Counselling is the role played by both clinical and counselling psychologist. Counselling psychologist is a more generalized role and may not have much insights into clinical disorders. Where as clinical psychologist would have done M.Phil and recognized by RCI. The only governing body in India for mental health. They are equipped with psychometric assessments and clinical disorders. No psychologist is eligible to prescribe medicines. They are qualified to apply therapies only based on their skill sets.

Hello, thank you for asking this question! A counselling psychologist is someone who utilizes their training and knowledge in the field of psychology to help people deal with day-to-day challenges, like stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, etc. They usually have a Master’s degree in Counselling, Psychology or other related fields. A clinical psychologist has a Master’s degree in Psychology, as well as an MPhil degree (in India). Although their role is quite similar to that of counsellors, they have a more theoretical background in the subject, and are trained to administer and analyze psychological tests. They also might have a demonstrated expertise in the treatment of clinical disorders like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc. as opposed to day-to-day issues.

Both of them are trained in therapies intensively. The only one major difference is that clinical psychologists can also prescribe medications and diagnose clinical mental health disorders. Counsellors can also recognize but they may not focus on clinical assessments but work on shifting habits, thinking patterns etc. As a first line of approach I don't think it should matter much. If a patient experiences psychotic symptoms or is not in touch with reality, needs rehabilitation etc.. then clinical approach will be needed. To begin with for concerns like stress, anxiety, depression, lack of confidence, relationships issues, identity concerns etc. you can go to either of them. Hope this helps and take care.

Dear Practo user, A clinical psychologist and a counsellor psychologist differ in their qualifications, expertise, area of work, licensing and other domains. Clinical psychologist uses diagnostic tools like pshometric assessment etc to diagnose psychological disorders and use therapies to help individuals with anxiety, depression, personality and other disorders. Clinical psychologist also work with individuals for self-esteem, interpersonal issues and other areas of functioning apart from disorders. In case of a clinical disorder an individual has to consult a Clinical psychologist for a proper diagnosis and treatment for the same. Counsellors are qualified people usually handling minor issues using professional techniques.

According to me there are not much differences though.. Clinical psychologist can diagnose the pathological based disorders also, if there are any.. Both of them use almost same methods and techniques for their therapies.. If you are having challenges such as Anxiety, Anger or Mild Depression, Or Stress, you can choose to consult any one of them according to your convenience..
