I have been having issues at home. Parental pressure, Rat race of competitive exams, recent breakup and an overall feeling of isolation. I have been considering getting professional help, but what should I choose? A psychologist, a psychiatrist or a therapist?

Hi there, Thank you for putting out everything that's bothersome for you. And, your concern of whom to consult is all about awareness. So, kudos for understanding and addressing your own issue. Well, all three will help. However, it will depend on what exactly your mental state is demanding. The concerns you have mentioned here are all external factors, so what is bothering you internally. Answer these first! If you are having anxiety bouts, sleepless nights, not able to focus or any self harm concern then a psychiatrist because mental health is also about your brain's health and a MD in Psychiatry will be able to diagnose depending on your symptoms. A psychiatrist then refers to a psychologist for counseling because issues like situational depression, sleeplessness or trauma or grief needs therapy. I will not delve into types of therapies here as it's a much longer topic. Now, a psychologist and a therapist are the same people. Just be sure a therapist has a degree in Psychology. You may even go to a Psychologist and if your concerns are grave, a psychologist will understand symptoms and refer you to a psychiatrist. If overall your concerns are more situational and your body is showing no symptoms of any disorder, a psychologist can help you with dedicated sessions to regulate your emotions and behaviour in a better way.

It seems to be post traumatic psychological changes leading to anxiety and mild depression. It needs to be treated asap otherwise it may get complicated and can affect your personal and social life. It can be well treated with counseling sessions and homeopathic medicine effectively and without any side effects. It needs to be treated in a holistic approach for complete recovery. Hi... There are lot of good mental health facilities in Mumbai. You can visit your nearest facility with good reviews and feedback from other students of your age. You may also look forward to the Counselling facility at your institute/college. Remember, it's not the title but the experience that matters. Any professional who has dealt with similar cases develops a deeper understanding of the underlying issues and the appropriate treatment plan to yeild effective recovery. Do not think to much and start your Counselling. Medications will not be prescribed for the issue that you have shared above, so visiting a Psychiatrist is not necessary in your case.
