Sorry for asking so many questions. I have compulsive masturbation behaviour and I’m looking for a psychologist.
Does the psychologist’s gender matter in this situation? Would a male or female psychologist be equally effective? I’m comfortable with either, but someone suggested that since I’m a man, a male psychologist might understand the problem better.
Is that actually true, or should I choose based on experience and specialization rather than gender?

Thank you for asking. In this situation, the psychologist’s gender does not determine how effective the therapy will be. If you are comfortable with both male and female psychologists, it is better to choose based on their experience, therapeutic approach and your comfort level.
For compulsive masturbation, look for a psychologist who has experience with compulsive sexual behaviour, OCD-related compulsions, anxiety, and CBT/ERP-based interventions, where appropriate.
During the first session, notice whether you feel safe discussing the topic without shame or judgement and whether the psychologist clearly explains the treatment plan.
So, rather than choosing a male psychologist simply because you are a man, I would suggest choosing the rightly trained professional with whom you can build a comfortable therapeutic relationship.

The psychologist’s gender does not necessarily determine how effective therapy will be. Both male and female psychologists can work effectively with concerns related to compulsive sexual behaviours or masturbation.
More important factors would be the psychologist’s experience, approach, specialisation, and most importantly, whether you feel comfortable and able to speak openly with them.
Health Tips
Gender may matter for personal comfort or preference, but it does not mean that a male psychologist will inherently understand this concern better simply because the patient is male.
