The advice to try naturally was 6 months is for girls less than 30 years of age
The reason behind this timeline is one act of intercourse in the fertile period would lead to chances of pregnancy approximately 8%
So women less than 30 years can try for 6 months
Where as women more than 30 are given three months time frame because after the age of 30 every year ovarian function is declining

The answer lies in , how long you have been married and for how long you have been trying to conceive. If you have been trying to conceive only for 2-3 months then the Doctor's advice is relevant.
The 6 months time for women more than 35years and 12 months time women less than 35 years is based on assumption that you are ovulating each cycle Or rather most cycles. So if you know as a matter of fact that you are not ovulating each cycle then seek help from a fertility specialist.
