Tooth pain, when to perform root canal
My father aged 83 is having tooth pain swelling. Dentist checked and said to perform RCT. Mox 500, Flamar 3D, Enzoflam is prescribed 1-0-1 For 5 days. He has taken for 2 days, bit slight pain and swelling is there. Can see on face too. His root canal 1st sitting is tomorrow. My Quest is - Can he start his RCT when pain is still there OR let the pain and swelling go off completely? Thanks in advance.

The root canal treatment can be initiated because the antibiotic coverage has already been started and initiating RCT will tremendously reduce the pain and swelling as inflammatory fluid which is the cause of pain and swelling will get the path to escape .
Next Steps
1. Finish the antibiotic course .

Hi since the course of antibiotics has already been started you can go ahead and get the procedure done. Infact with root canal treatment the pain and swelling will reduce considerably. Swelling is nothing but localised collection of inflammatory fluid , since there is no place for it come out it keeps accumulating there. By doing the root canal treatment we are creating a pathway for the infection to pass out.
Next Steps
Instructions: 1. Continue and finish the course of antibiotics. 2. Do not bite anything hard on that side. 3. Avoid hot and spicy food. 4. Do not put pressure or sleep on the side of the swelling. 5. Alternative hot and cold compresses may help. 6. Use a mouthwash for oral hygiene maintainance. 7. If swelling still persists add on an anti-inflammatory with dentists consent.
