To stop compulsive behaviour
My brother got bite by a dog a month ago when he tried to rescue our pet dog.All vaccine were given. The dog is alive till now. Even though our pet dog stays outside the house, my brother keeps washing his hands and stays in a room which he wants to be cleaned before and after he walks in or out. By these actions he believes he eliminate chances to aquire rabies by contact. This behaviour is worsening day by day. Please suggest a solution to make him come out of this.

Dear human, thank you for sharing and reaching out. I appreciate your effort to seek help/suggestions for your brother, as you’ve taken the first step in trying to resolve his concern. Washing one’s hands and cleaning could be a compulsive behavior, if it’s very consistent and if it interferes in their daily functioning. If it qualifies as a compulsive behavior, it might be preceded by obsessive thoughts, which are involuntary thoughts or images that occur over and over again in one’s mind. In simpler terms, he might get intrusive thoughts on acquiring rabies, which will cause anxiety and to relieve these anxious feelings, he involves hand washing and cleaning behavior. This will provide him with temporary relief from the obsessive thoughts and this cycle will continue. But this behavior is considered as a trouble only when it’s time consuming and causes impairment in all aspects of his life. These behaviors can also be due to general fear or anxiety of contamination or acquiring rabies, not necessarily obsessions and compulsions. This could be clarified by seeking professional help or consulting a psychologist. Until then, to relieve him from the fear or anxiety or to distract him from the compulsive behaviours, he can try few techniques: 1. Counting backwards from 100 2. Reassuring that everything is fine 3. Try to involve in some hobbies or interests 4. Listing few positive things and describing them

Hi! Thanks for reaching out. It is likely that your brother has developed a fear or phobia after the incident. This can lead to the compulsive behaviours he is exhibiting. Please consider talking to him first, in order to understand his emotions and thoughts better. You can suggest certain coping techniques like journaling, exercising and meditation to him, in order to help him regulate the thoughts associated with his compulsive behaviours. I also suggest that you encourage him to practice grounding techniques like the 5-4-3-2-1 technique when he feels anxious or restless because of his fears and concerns. Lastly, please encourage him to reach out for support through therapy. There are various therapeutic techniques that can be used in order to deal with the concerns he is currently going through.
