What could be happening? Although your doctor earlier felt the breathing difficulty was mainly due to panic attacks and stress, the return of suffocation, difficulty speaking, and difficulty walking after 4 years without inhalers means your symptoms need to be taken seriously. Two things commonly cause this pattern: 1. Panic-related breathlessness When anxiety suddenly spikes, muscles tighten and breathing becomes fast and shallow. This can make you feel: • Unable to breathe deeply • Chest tightness • Weakness in legs • Shaking, numbness, feeling like you will faint Even if this is “just anxiety,” the feeling of suffocation is very real and very distressing. 2. Underlying airway issue (like asthma) getting triggered again Sometimes asthma can stay silent for years and flare up suddenly due to: • Stress or panic • Weather changes • Dust, smoke, perfume • Viral infections • Lack of regular inhaler use If your chest feels tight, you hear wheezing, breathing is noisy, or you feel better when sitting upright, then a respiratory cause might be contributing.
Next Steps
What should you do right now? Because you cannot talk properly and feel suffocated, please treat this as urgent: • Sit upright, loosen tight clothing. • Take slow breaths: inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds. • If you have an inhaler (salbutamol), take 2 puffs, repeat after 10 minutes if still breathless. • Avoid lying down (it worsens breathlessness). • Try to have someone with you.
Health Tips
You need medical evaluation if: • You still feel suffocated after using an inhaler • You cannot speak full sentences • You feel dizzy or like you will faint • Your heart is racing continuously • Chest pain develops If any of this is happening now, please go to the nearest clinic or emergency room. Even if the cause is anxiety, doctors can help you calm your breathing and check oxygen levels. Your symptoms can be due to a combination of returning airway sensitivity + panic attack, and both need to be checked. Don’t wait it out if the suffocation is ongoing.

If your breathing difficulty started again after tension and a panic attack, it is likely anxiety-triggered, especially since you were symptom-free for 4 years without an inhaler. But any suffocation feeling + trouble talking/walking should not be ignored. It is most likely panic-related breathlessness, but you should get checked today to rule out asthma flare, infection, or any other cause. For now you can do: Immediate relief: Sit upright, loosen tight clothes. Slow breathing: inhale 4 sec → hold 2 sec → exhale 6 sec for 5–7 rounds. Splash cold water on face. If you have propranolol / clonazepam already prescribed, you may take the doctor-advised dose (don’t start new medicines yourself). Avoid caffeine, heavy meals, and stress triggers today. Seek urgent care if: You cannot speak full sentences Lips/nails turn bluish Chest pain Symptoms keep worsening
