Squirrels are very low-risk for rabies transmission â there are no documented cases of rabies transmission from squirrels to humans in most parts of the world. However, any animal bite can cause a bacterial infection and should be cleaned thoroughly. A tetanus injection is recommended if you are not up to date on vaccination.

Please wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and apply an antiseptic. I would advise an in-person medical evaluation to assess the wound, tetanus immunization status, and the need for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis based on the circumstances of the bite and local epidemiology. Monitor for redness, swelling, pain, pus discharge, or fever, and seek medical attention promptly if these occur.
