For tapering Propranolol 10mg twice daily (total 20mg/day):
Better option: 10mg ONCE daily
Why:
- Maintains more stable blood levels
- Easier to remember (once vs twice)
- Standard tapering protocol
- Less risk of rebound symptoms
5mg twice daily also works but:
- Need to remember 2 doses
- More chance of missing dose
- Same total dose (10mg/day)
Tapering Schedule:
- Week 1-2: 10mg once daily
- Week 3-4: 5mg once daily
- Then stop (if doctor approves)
Important:
- NEVER stop beta blockers suddenly
- Can cause rebound tachycardia, hypertension
- Taper slowly over 2-4 weeks
- Consult prescribing doctor before stopping
Recommendation: Take 10mg once daily (morning preferred) for 2 weeks, then reduce to 5mg once daily.
Next Steps
1. Take 10mg once daily (morning) for 2 weeks 2. Then reduce to 5mg once daily for 2 weeks 3. Consult doctor before completely stopping 4. Monitor: heart rate, BP, anxiety levels 5. If symptoms worsen - contact doctor 6. Don't skip doses during tapering 7. Set phone reminder for daily dose

Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician.
Your case has been allotted to me.
I understand your concern. Inderal (Propranolol) is a beta blocker that helps control anxiety, palpitations, tremors and sometimes blood pressure. It should never be stopped suddenly, as abrupt withdrawal can cause rebound increase in heart rate, anxiety or blood pressure.
â Advices
The dose should be tapered gradually over one to two weeks.
Both tapering methods you mentioned can work, but the preferred and safer way is to reduce the total daily dose slowly rather than dropping one full dose suddenly.
Hence, taking 5 mg twice a day for a week is gentler on the body than 10 mg once daily.
What to Monitor
Heart rate and any recurrence of palpitations or anxiety.
Lightheadedness, dizziness or tiredness.
Management
After taking 5 mg twice daily for one week, you may then shift to 5 mg once daily for another 5 to 7 days, and then stop completely if you remain symptom free. If the medicine was prescribed for anxiety or migraine prevention, it is best to inform your doctor before stopping.
When to Consult a Doctor Immediately
If heart rate increases suddenly or you feel chest discomfort.
If you develop excessive sweating, tremors or dizziness.
Every patientâs tapering plan may differ depending on the reason for taking the medicine. It is best to confirm your taper schedule once with your prescribing doctor to avoid withdrawal effects.

Share your medical details for what you are taking propanolol.
Dont stop this medicine abruptly,
if you are taking it for anxiety (tanav kam karne ke liye) then you can taper it to 10 mg once a day and then to 5mg once a day .
