Propranolol 40mg sr overdose any problem
“I have anxiety and OCD. The doctor told me to take normal propranolol 40 mg twice a day, but I mistakenly took propranolol 40 mg sustained release twice in one day. What will happen now? What should I do? Will it cause heart failure?”

Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician (Ex Govt Medical Officer at RML Hospital, New Delhi), and your case has been allotted to me. Thank you for sharing this. I understand why this is causing anxiety, but let me reassure you clearly. First and most important reassurance 👉 This will NOT cause heart failure. 👉 Taking propranolol 40 mg sustained release twice in one day is unlikely to cause any serious harm in a healthy person. What actually happened • Sustained release (SR) releases medicine slowly over time • By taking it twice, you have taken a higher dose than intended, but still within a generally safe range Possible symptoms you may feel • Slight low heart rate • Dizziness or lightheadedness • Mild fatigue • Cold hands or feet 👉 Many people feel nothing at all What you should do now • Do not take any more propranolol today • Rest and stay hydrated • Avoid sudden standing (to prevent dizziness) • Monitor: – Heart rate – Blood pressure (if possible) When to seek medical help • Heart rate < 50/min • Severe dizziness or fainting • Breathlessness • Chest discomfort What to do next dose 👉 Resume your correct prescribed dose from next day 👉 Do not double dose again Important reassurance (very important for anxiety) • This is a common medication mistake • The dose you took is not dangerous • It does not damage the heart For personalised guidance and anxiety management support, you can reach out to me on WhatsApp at 85271646 seven seven. You are safe. Just observe and rest. Dr. Romain Rajan General Physician

Not dangerous. No risk of heart failure. Extra dose of Propranolol may cause mild low pulse, BP, dizziness. Skip next dose, rest, hydrate. Restart normal dose tomorrow. If fainting, very slow pulse, or breathing issue → seek care. Otherwise you’ll be fine.
