Hello. Pain and tenderness in jaw can occur due to various reasons like cavity, impacted/erupting 3rd molar, temporomandibular joint disorder or radiation pain. To know the exact cause of pain you will have to visit a dentist for clinical examination and as well will require an OPG (full mouth x-ray) In case of impacted 3rd molar, it is advised to undergo an extraction of the tooth. Kindly visit a dentist for definitive diagnosis and treatment

Because sometimes the third molar eruption is delayed results in pain and swelling in the area specially a patient complain of pain in opening the mouth near TMJ area. So if it is eruption pain then it is normal otherwise pain and swelling can occur due to local abcess ,caries or any other gingival problem . So to make a diagnosis we need a detailed description . It will be better for you to consult a doctor nearby you.
