Hi.
The symptoms you have described can be due to a lot of reasons, including something as simple and treatable as Laryngo-Pharyngeal Reflux Disease ( LPRD). This happens when the acid from your stomach comes up while lying down and irritates the back of your throat. This is the reason why the sensation is worst in the morning. It can also be due to others reasons like sinusitis, where the secretions from your nose and sinuses flow down into your throat causing the pricking feeling. The easiest way to diagnose the problem would be a diagnostic endoscopy of the nose and throat. This is an OPD procedure, takes just a few minutes and is reasonably pain-free. I would recommend that you visit an ENT surgeon for a detailed evaluation.

Most likely reason is acid reflux.
Avoid spicy and citrus foods
Take antacid for few days.
Cough can also be due to postnatal drip.
Consult online for proper evaluation and treatment.
Then the reason for the irritation has to be evaluated it can either be sinusitis or hyper acidity, will have to take a look to be sure. Consult with and ENT avoid forceful coughing.
