Paroxetine & Multivitamin
Hello Doctor, I am currently taking Paroxetine 12.5 mg at night for anxiety and mild depression. I wanted to ask: • Can I take a multivitamin tablet in the morning or afternoon after food along with Paroxetine? Is there any interaction or side effect if both are taken? • I have ordered Centrum multivitamin — is it a good and safe multivitamin to use? • I drink alcohol rarely (occasionally) — is it safe to consume alcohol sometimes while taking Paroxetine, or should it be completely avoided? • Sometimes I experience nausea and Reduced Appetite after taking Paroxetine. Is this a common side effect, and what can I do to control or reduce it? Thank you.

You are taking Paroxetine 12.5 mg (an SSRI) for anxiety and mild depression. Multivitamin with Paroxetine ✔ Yes, you can safely take a multivitamin in the morning or afternoon. ✔ There is no significant interaction between Paroxetine and standard multivitamins. Centrum is a well-known, balanced multivitamin and is generally safe if: • Taken once daily • Taken after food No issue combining it with Paroxetine. ⸻ Alcohol with Paroxetine Occasional alcohol is not strictly contraindicated, but: • Paroxetine can increase alcohol’s sedative effects • Alcohol can worsen anxiety and depression • Combining them may increase dizziness or impaired judgment So: ✔ Small quantity occasionally is usually tolerated ❌ Avoid heavy drinking ❌ Avoid if you notice worsening mood next day Best practice: Limit as much as possible while on antidepressants. ⸻ Nausea & Reduced Appetite Very common early side effects of Paroxetine. Occurs because: • Serotonin receptors in gut get stimulated • Usually improves in 2–3 weeks Since you’re on 12.5 mg (controlled-release likely), symptoms are usually mild and temporary.
Next Steps
To Reduce Nausea: ✔ Take Paroxetine after dinner ✔ Do not take on empty stomach ✔ Eat small frequent meals ✔ Ginger tea may help ✔ Avoid very oily/spicy food If nausea persists beyond 3–4 weeks: • Dose adjustment may help • Switching timing sometimes helps ⸻ Regarding Appetite: • It often improves once body adjusts • Ensure protein intake even if appetite low • Stay hydrated If weight loss becomes significant → review with doctor.
Health Tips
• Take medication at same time daily • Avoid abrupt stopping (can cause withdrawal symptoms) • Regular exercise improves antidepressant response • Sleep hygiene is very important • Avoid excess caffeine Seek review if: • Severe vomiting • Significant weight loss • Increased anxiety after starting • Sexual side effects bothering you • Mood worsening ⸻ ✔ Multivitamin (Centrum) is safe with Paroxetine ✔ Occasional small alcohol intake may be tolerated but best minimized ✔ Nausea and reduced appetite are common and usually temporary If nausea continues or mood is not improving after 4–6 weeks, dose review may be required. Regular follow-up helps optimize therapy safely.

You can take a multivitamin like Centrum in the morning; it is generally safe with Paroxetine and has no major interaction. Mild nausea and low appetite can happen initially and often improve with time—take the medicine after food.
Next Steps
Avoid or limit alcohol as it can worsen side effects. Consult me for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Reduced appetite and nausea can occur after paroxetine, but it improves over time. You can take multivitamin with it, just do not gulp the 2 together, keep gap of an hour or so between.
