My braces treatment is about to get over which included 4 premolar extractions. My orthodontist did not take any x-rays or tests and straight up suggested for extraction after 5 to 6 months of treatment as according to him my teeths were protruded and there was no gap to move my teeths. I feel like it was not necessary in my case but my he just went for it. My main concern right now is that my palate looks narrow(around 30mm IMW) and feel a little disturbed as my tongue constantly touch my teeths. Please suggest me what can I do in such case except asking my current ortho as he is reluctant to help.

It is very normal to feel crowded after extraction. The bolume of the oral cabity reduces slightly after extraction (if the teeth were very well aligned before the start of your treatment). Your tongue will take some time to adjust to the new volume. Please give it some time.
If you are still unsure please take opinion from another orthodontist.

Hello
Please visit the orthodontist for the second opinion
IMW is narrow according to whatever you mentioned
It’s better if you go for the another orthodontist to know if the treatment was done correctly, which can be only evaluated upon a physical examination
Get a Second Opinion from Another Orthodontist
- Whether the extractions were truly necessary.
- If your palate is narrow (30mm IMW is below the average of ~35-40mm for adults).
- Whether expansion (e.g., palatal expanders ,ALF appliances , or surgical options) could help.
Consider Palatal Expansion Options
Non-Surgical Expansion (if still possible)
- MSE (Maxillary Skeletal Expander) Works even in adults by opening the midpalatal suture.
- DNA/Vivos Appliance – A slower, non-surgical approach.
- If your tongue touches your teeth, it may indicate insufficient space or improper swallowing patterns.
- Myofunctional therapy can help retrain tongue posture (should rest on the palate, not teeth).
Monitor for Long-Term Effects
- Extractions + retraction can sometimes lead to:
- Reduced oral space (sleep apnea risk).
- TMJ issues.
- Flattened facial profile.
- If you notice breathing/sleep issues.
- Get a CBCT scan to assess palate structure.
- Avoid further retraction until evaluated.
