To start with, there are 7 different types of depression and ways to deal with them are different. Following are the different types of depressions: Organic Depression: It can be due to multiple medical conditions. Look for anaemia, thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiency, diabetes and treat the medical condition Depression secondary to drug use: It can be due to excessive alcohol use, cannabis use, smoking and other drugs of abuse. One needs to quit and be sober. Depression which is a part of bipolar illness: One needs to consult Psychiatrist Major depressive disorder: It a clinical disorder/ condition of the brain and not just a sad phase of life. Again Requires specialist Psychiatrist Intervention. Can lead to suicide if not treated. Adjustment disorder with depressive symptoms: Depression secondary to a life stress. e.g failure in exam, break up, financial loss etc Dysthymia/ Chronic Depressive disorder : Mild Depression which continues for many years A sad phase of life/ Sad mood/ Fatigue: This is experienced by almost everyone on earth, but does not satisfy the criteria of clinical depression, but most commonly understood and expressed as “depression” by general public. The ways to fight depression are similar for number 6, 7 and 8 and can be tried at individual level but sometimes may need mental health professional intervention if its causing socio-occupational dysfunction. To begin with, one needs to watch their thoughts. check the rationality of their negative thoughts and introspect the proof of every negative thought. If one doesn't have enough proof for that negative thought one should try and give up that thought. E.g the thought “Everyone hates me or everyone ignores me or i am a failure” needs to be challenged and an rational alternative has to be discussed and accepted. Secondly,Negative thoughts lead to negative behaviour. if you cannot change thoughts, change your behaviour and that will change your thoughts. e.g i am feeling tired so i will not go to the gym. Start going to the gym and you will feel fresh and happy. Exercise and meditation are the best medicines. Get up and start any form of exercise. Help seeking. In depression we have tunneling of thoughts and one sees only darkness. discussing your problems with friends and family will make you feel better and you will end up finding solutions to your problems by yourself while the discussion is going on. try it! Make sure you sleep on time no matter what. This will harmonize your brain hormones which will take care of your depression. 7 to 8 hours sleep between 10 pm and 7 am is a must. Make an effort and restart all the activities you stopped due to your sad mood. Stop excessive use of mobile, stay away from social networking sites. Majority of people get sad if they compare themselves with someone, less efforts more expectations, want everything in life which is not possible, prioritize materialistic things over relationships, worry about what other people are thinking about them, continuously try to please all the people and avoid criticism which is never possible. If you are doing any of these things, just stop and let go. Find a purpose in life. If too difficult to find, start with helping someone with whatever you have. Find a new hobby, try something which you always wanted to do, start a new online course, learn an instrument. If nothing written above is possible, just unconditionally accept that you are screwd in life. Everyone (millions of examples) including the one writing this answer for you, at one point of time is screwd in life. But there is always a silver lining. Wait for yours. Don’t give up no matter what.
