Knee replacement
My dad 50 years old. He is suferring from arthritis in his knees from the past 17 years. He had bow legs in both the legs hence He had undergone HTO in both legs when he was 19 years to correct the deformity. There are 2 screws in his left leg which couldn't be removed due to muscle growth when surgery was done to remove those screws 5 years later. If he has to undergo a knee replacement surgery in future should the screws be removed before the surgery or it can be removed during the same surgery ? He has pain in his knees but by god's grace he is able to do his daily activities. Please let me know weather the screws can be removed during the knee replacement surgery ? I have attached the x ray.

The removal of screws depends on whether there is any sub clinical infection. That can be detected by doing ESR and CRP tests. Once infection is ruled out, the screws can be removed during the total knee replacement surgery. If there is any suspected infection, it is always best to remove the screws first, treat the infection for 3-6 weeks, repeat the ESR and CRP and then plan for Total knee replacement. In the presence of infection, Total knee replacement will not be done by the surgeon
Next Steps
ESR and CRP tests, Inspection by the Treating surgeon to rule out infection clinically
