Kid Refractive Error
My son is 3 years old, he doesn't interact much and doesn't and doesn't follow instructions. Recently he has been diagnosed with refractive error in both eyes. The doctor has prescribed a minimum number as of now -2.00 Cyl in RE & -3.00 Cyl in LE. He said his LE number can be more. There is a sph number also. Can someone tell me what needs to be done. As I have seen at multiple places the number keeps on increasing until 18 years of age. Also the doctor has prescribed Pataone drops once a day and ecotears plus (Sodium Hyaluronate 0.18) drops twice a day. Any suggestions and help matters.

Hii You need to continue using prescribed glasses for your child. His glasses power can increase as he grows. For that you need to be in follow up with ophthalmologist. Don’t worry, refractive effors are quite common and easily be treated. Minimise screen time for him.

Hello You can continue the medications as per your ophthalmologist and regular follow-up as per his advice should be continued.. Regarding his communication delays a proper developmental assessment should be done his social and language milestones, any repetitive behaviours, fixed pattern of interests, any hearing loss, everything need to be assessed that can be initially done by your paediatrician .kindly consult your paediatrician

The refractive error should be corrected with the prescribed glasses as early as possible and worn consistently to prevent amblyopia (lazy eye). The eye power may change as your child grows, so regular follow-up with the pediatric ophthalmologist every 3–6 months is important. Not every child’s spectacle number keeps increasing until 18 years—this varies from child to child. However, the concerns about reduced interaction and not following instructions are not explained by the eye power alone. Your son should also have a developmental assessment, including evaluation of hearing, speech and language, and screening for autism spectrum disorder or other developmental conditions. Early intervention is very important if any delay is identified. The prescribed eye drops (Patanol/Pataone for allergy and sodium hyaluronate lubricant) should be used as advised by your ophthalmologist.

Greetings. 3-year-old boy diagnosed with bilateral refractive errors (astigmatism), who is exhibiting communication delays and behavioral changes. His high prescription requires immediate correction with prescription glasses to ensure normal visual development and prevent amblyopia (lazy eye), a condition where the brain and eyes do not properly coordinate. Correcting his vision could significantly improve his social interaction and ability to follow instructions, as children with untreated poor eyesight often withdraw from their surroundings. While childhood refractive numbers can shift as the eye physically grows, regular check-ups with a pediatric ophthalmologist are essential to adjust prescriptions and monitor his overall sensory and behavioral milestones

Along with the eye number, you should be concerned about your child behaviour for that you should consult a paediatric neurologist because the symptoms you are telling that he doesn’t follow instructions. He doesn’t make a good eye contact. These are not normal. Maybe his vision issues are not due to his eye problem. He has some other concern which are causing all these issue. So my suggestion for you is consult me or any other paediatric neurologist which you can find suitable, but opinion and child’s evaluation and examination should be done thoroughly before commenting alone on the refraction error.
