Insomnia and Gut health
I work Night Shifts from 8:30 PM to 5:30 PM. I have a strict schedule for my sleep cycle and I daily get around 7-8 hours of sleep. But once a month , I have a couple of days where I get uneasy and my blood pressure fluctuates and I cannot sleep. And I go without sleeping for more than 24 hours which affects my gut health and also causes migrane issues. How can I stop these random incidents which are now becoming more frequent.

The root cause is your night shift. It disrupts the body's circadian rhythm. You can make small changes like eating meals at the same time of the shift and avoid large heavy meals at midnight. Limit caffeine before sleeping in the first half of shift.

Hello. Working night shifts chronically disrupts your body’s natural circadian rhythm (internal biological clock), leading to a condition known as Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD). Why These Symptoms Occur Together: BP Fluctuations & Uneasiness: Going without sleep for over 24 hours triggers a sharp surge in stress hormones (cortisol and adrenaline). This sympathetic nervous system activation causes blood pressure spikes, anxiety, and general restlessness. Migraines: Sleep deprivation and sudden disruption of sleep cycles are well-documented triggers for migraine attacks. Gut Health Connection (Gut-Brain Axis): Your gastrointestinal tract is deeply linked to your circadian rhythm. Chronic night shifts and sleep loss disrupt normal gut motility and acid secretion, leading to bloating, acidity, or irregular bowel habits. Symptomatic & Pharmacological Guidance: Melatonin Supplementation: Short-term use of a low-dose Melatonin (3 mg to 5 mg) taken 30–45 minutes before your planned sleep time can help reset your sleep-wake cycle on difficult days. SOS Migraine Relief: Keep a mild prescribed migraine aborted therapy (like Tab. Paracetamol 650 mg or Tab. Naproxen / Rizatriptan) handy to take at the very onset of headache rather than waiting for it to worsen. Acidity Protection: Take Tab. Pantoprazole 40 mg on days when sleep is severely disturbed to protect the stomach lining from stress-induced hyperacidity.
Next Steps
Get basic blood work done including Complete Blood Count (CBC), Fasting Blood Sugar, Thyroid Profile (TSH), and Lipid Profile to ensure metabolic health.
Health Tips
Optimize Sleep Environment: Ensure your bedroom is completely dark (use blackout curtains), cool, and quiet during day-sleep. Use earplugs or a white noise machine to block external daylight noise. Anchor Sleep Schedule: Keep your sleep and wake times as consistent as possible, even on your days off. Avoid switching back and forth abruptly between day and night schedules. Blue Light Management: Wear blue-light blocking glasses during your commute home in the morning so bright sunlight doesn't signal your brain to stop producing natural sleep hormones. Caffeine Cut-off: Avoid caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea, energy drinks) at least 5 to 6 hours before your intended shift end-time.

Based on this, working night shifts causes Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD) and circadian rhythm misalignment. Even with a routine, circadian disruption increases sympathetic nervous system tone (causing spikes in blood pressure and restlessness), alters gut motility via the gut-brain axis, and triggers migraine attacks due to acute sleep deprivation. However, for a proper diagnosis and to evaluate your autonomic cardiovascular responses, a comprehensive clinical assessment is necessary.
Health Tips
To accurately evaluate your circadian disruptions, review your blood pressure patterns side-by-side with your migraine symptoms, and formulate a targeted medical sleep and gut management plan, please book a direct consultation session via my Practo profile."
