Hi... Substances like alcohol hijack the brains reward system thereby not only making the person dependant on that substance, but also takes away the other ways a person can feel any better. S/he no longer have any interest left in any of his/her previously liked activities/hobbies. At an early stage, it can be addressed with medication (by psychiatrist) and psychotherapy/counselling (by psychologist). But if the addiction has become very severe and prolonged, then joining a de-addiction centre is the right treatment as the substance needs to be washed out of the person's body.
